From the Netbook

It's been a while since I've posted anything new here -- it continues to amaze me how long it takes to spend two minutes updating a blog! It doesn't seem like much until you have to carve the time out to do it. Anyway, here I am, and since I'm on our new Samsung N130 netbook I have no new photos at my disposal to upload, but here are some from the archives.

And here's our latest little electronic toy we're test-driving (Mom, this is the kind of computer you thought you might be interested in -- we'll let you know what we think after using it a while):

Hey, great timing! I'm planning on shopping with Mom this weekend for a new computer. She's thinking netbook, but I'm leery of it due to the small screen size, so I'm recommending a low-end laptop instead with a 13" screen.

I'll try to call you before we go out to hear your impressions.

The screen is definitely not user friendly in the long term, but it can support very high resolution external monitors, so if you go with one of these I'd use some of your savings to add on a 22" LCD.

The reson for getting something new is that my computer is really struggling in its old age. The idea of getting something smaller was mainly the portability. I think I need a good-sized screen, but is that only because it would naturally be more difficult to go from big to small? Is it just a matter of getting used to it? I'm trying one that Nate just brought home last night. I have it over the weekend. The resolution on the screen is beautiful and so is easy to read, but when you mention a 22"LCD my mouth waters! If I wanted to carry that from ON to AB and back 6 times a year how diifficult is it? Or maybe I should just stick with a normal sized computer--but slimmer and lighter than the 25 pound clunker I have now.

You shouldn't be transporting a large monitor back and forth. You could just buy two, one for each home. Of course with a monitor you'll be forced to sit at a desk rather than the couch. If you're okay with that, then that might be a good idea.

But the monitors will cost $200 each, so add it all up and you may be better off buying a larger laptop.

I'm looking at the MSI X340--13" screen but still less than 3 lbs. Or the Acer Aspire Timeline 3810TZ--also 13" screen but 3.6 lbs. Both are under $800 CAD.
